The Legislative Conference is an opportunity for public transportation industry professionals across the nation to make our presence felt and our voices heard in Washington, DC. The Conference educates members on important federal legislation and policy initiatives; provides members with the opportunity to shape the industry's policies and federal advocacy agenda; offers sessions with key Members of Congress, Administration officials, Congressional staff, and Washington opinion makers; and provides you with the tools that you need to advocate effectively on Capitol Hill.
Following the midterm elections, it is critical to build relationships with the scores of new Members of Congress coming to Washington and strengthen our relationships with returning Members. A bipartisan infrastructure initiative that significantly increases investment is the talk of the new Congress, and we need to be well positioned to capitalize on opportunities, overcome challenges and advance our agenda of increased mobility and economic opportunities for all Americans.
During the 2018 meeting, APTA members visited hundreds of Congressional offices. The timing of this advocacy was impeccable, as Congress was making the final decisions that week on a bipartisan appropriations agreement that provided historic increases for public transportation investment. We need to keep up our efforts to ensure that Congress builds on those gains, opposes proposals to cut key transit investments, and understands the importance of fixing the Highway Trust Fund.
Previous speakers from the Executive Branch have included Secretaries of the U.S. Department of Transportation and Administrators from the Federal Transit Administration and Federal Railroad Administration. Key Congressional leaders have also participated in previous conferences, including Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee Ranking Member Sherrod Brown, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Ranking Member Peter A. DeFazio, Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee Ranking Member Sen. Jack Reed, House Subcommittee on Highways and Transit Chairman Sam Graves, Rep. Earl Blumenauer, Rep. Rodney Davis and senior Congressional staff.
Who should attend: CEOs, board members, government affairs and communications professionals, transit operators, consultants, manufacturers and suppliers, local coalition members, and state association leaders.
