The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) began in 1976 under the guidance of Drs. F. Mason Sones and Melvin P. Judkins. These scientists, whose contribution permitted the development and implementation of invasive cardiology, foresaw the need for an organization which would service and advance the discipline further. On June 5, 1978, SCAI held its inaugural Annual Meeting. Emphasis was placed on registration of all procedures performed by members, development of quality standards for laboratories, establishment of criteria for credentialing physicians and directors and presentation of guidelines for training in cardiac catheterization and angiography. SCAI now has over 4,000 members in over 70 different countries.
