John C. West, JD, MHA, DFASHRM, CPHRM is the Principal of West Consulting Services, an independent risk management and patient safety consulting firm. He holds a law degree from Chase College of Law, a master's degree in Health Services Administration from Xavier University, and a bachelor's degree (Biology) from the University of Cincinnati. He holds the designation of distinguished fellow of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM).
He received the Presidential Citation Award from ASHRM (2011) and the Distinguished Service Award from ASHRM (2001), which is its highest honor. He has also been a certified professional in healthcare risk management since 2006. Mr. West has broad experience in loss prevention, including professional and general liability, occupational safety and health, and environmental impairment. He was certified in industrial hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene in 1983. Since 1994, Mr. West has been the author of the "Case Law Update" column, published quarterly in the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management. He is a regular speaker at national and regional risk management meetings and has published numerous articles on risk management.

James Lam is a pioneering chief risk officer and early advocate of enterprise risk management (ERM). In this keynote address, James will discuss emerging best practices in ERM and provide a compelling case study based on his experience as Chairman of the Risk Oversight Committee at E*TRADE Financial.
James Lam is President of James Lam & Associates, a risk management consulting firm he founded in January 2002. He works with companies across all industry sectors on improving the effectiveness of their risk management programs. James has also served as an executive coach to current and aspiring chief risk officers.
In November of 2012, James was appointed to the Board of Directors of E*TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: ETFC). Upon his appointment, he was named Chairman of the Risk Oversight Committee and a member of the Audit Committee. An NACD Board Leadership Fellow, James was recently recognized in the 2017 NACD Directorship 100 as one of “the most influential people in the boardroom community.”
James is the author of Enterprise Risk Management: From Incentives to Controls, which has ranked #1 best-selling among 25,000 risk management titles on Amazon.com. The book has been translated into Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, and Korean. His new book Implementing Enterprise Risk Management was published by Wiley in March 2017.
In 1997, James received the inaugural Risk Manager of the Year Award from the Global Association of Risk Professionals. For three years (2005, 2006, and 2008), Treasury & Risk Management magazine named him one of the “100 Most Influential People in Finance.”
James graduated summa cum laude with a B.B.A. from Baruch College in 1983 and received an M.B.A. with honors from UCLA in 1989. James has taught M.B.A. classes at Babson College and the Hult International Business School. He has also guest lectured at Harvard Business School.
Diana Nyad, the world-record holder who swam from Cuba to Florida at age 64, knows a thing or two about perseverance. Even after dangerous conditions cancelled two her previous attempts and jellyfish stings and burns made every swimming stroke excruciatingly painful, she never gave up. In the ASHRM 2017 Closing Keynote, Diana will share her inspirational and entertaining stories and provide insight on how she powers through to achieve the impossible.
Diana Nyad, at age 64, became the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage, swimming 111 miles in 53 hours from Havana to Key West. Prior to this remarkable achievement, Nyad was a nationally known sports broadcaster and fitness personality. She rose to fame in the 1970s as a world-record setting long-distance swimmer with open-water achievements, including a record-breaking swim around Manhattan. She now serves as a public speaker, delivering TED Talks and conference keynotes across the world.
