Description

Rabia Siddique: Opening General Session Speaker at the Annual Conference

Courage Under Fire

Opening Session Keynote: Sunday, October 22, 3:00-5:00 p.m.

The opening general session of ICMA’s 103rd annual conference will feature an inspirational presentation by Rabia Siddique, a former war crimes and terrorism prosecutor, international humanitarian, retired British Army officer, hostage survivor, and mother of triplets. Rabia’s story of courage, strength, and resilience, along with her commitment to truth, justice, equality, and authentic leadership, defines her.

Having battled abuse, discrimination, chronic health problems, and trauma, she is a fighter, trailblazer, and an eternal optimist. Rabia’s keynote, Courage Under Fire, will inspire, motivate, and empower you; free you from whatever is holding you hostage; and enable you to display courage under fire.

Bio

Having faced a life of exceptional circumstances, including being held hostage, fighting the UK Ministry of Defence – and winning, as well as facing abuse, Rabia has turned her focus to using her story to inspire and motivate others. Born and raised in Perth during the conservative era of the 70’s to an Indian Muslim father and White Australian mother, Rabia is well aware of nontraditional conditions. Her adult years are marked by time spent as a terrorism and war crimes prosecutor, which ultimately led to her being taken hostage.

Her amazing life stories have manifested themselves in her truly unique novel, Equal Justice, that not only serves the purpose of relaying her story but also is a catalyst for discussions regarding leadership, resilience, and equality.

Richard Florida

The New Urban Crisis
Keynote: Monday, October 23, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

In recent years, the young, educated, and affluent have surged back into cities, reversing decades of suburban flight and urban decline. One of the first scholars to anticipate this back-to-the-city movement in his groundbreaking The Rise of the Creative Class, Florida believes that the same forces that power the growth of the world's superstar cities also generate their vexing challenges: gentrification, unaffordability, segregation, and inequality. Florida’s research focuses on the challenges that face urban cities, ranging from unaffordability to gentrification; his findings have allowed him to receive credit as the foreseer of the back-to-the-city movement discussed in his earlier works. Meanwhile, many more cities still stagnate, and middle-class neighborhoods everywhere are disappearing. Florida's keynote, The New Urban Crisis, offers a compelling diagnosis of our economic ills and a bold prescription for more inclusive cities capable of ensuring growth and prosperity for all.

Named the world’s most influential thought leader by an MIT study and boasting a TIME magazine recognition naming his Twitter feed one of the 140 most influential in the world, Richard Florida can be easily dubbed one of the most modern urbanists. He serves as an editor for The Atlantic, where he co-founded and serves as editor-at-large for CityLab. Most recently, he published The New Urban Crisis, which is an embodiment of his research dissecting the decline of middle-class neighborhoods and the growth of cities, for better or for worse.
