Mexico City Offers World-Class Destination for Meetings & Events
EventsInAmerica.com (EIA) spoke with Maria Magdalena Sánchez López (at right in photo) and Raquel Ramirez Orozco about Mexico City as a destination.
EIA: Tell me about your organization.
Magda: We represent the Mexico City Tourism Trust. It’s an institution of the government of Mexico City that promotes tourism, with a focus on the meetings industry. We’re a great destination for meetings. Mexico City is full of color, folklore, culture and history. We’re also modern and cosmopolitan. And we love to welcome visitors. We receive almost 12.5 million people every year, just in Mexico City alone.
Americans have a love for Mexican food.
Magda: Yes, Americans and everyone else! Traditional Mexican cuisine has been honored by UNESCO as an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.’ And Mexico City has become an important culinary destination in that we offer cuisines from all over the world and restaurants from simple to sophisticated. Our chefs are fusing traditional recipes with new techniques and ingredients, and our restaurants are frequently mentioned among the world’s best. So if you love food, Mexico City is your destination.
What about hosting meetings and conventions in Mexico City?
Raquel: We have world-class convention centers and hotels. You’ll find all the important hotel brands like JW Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Intercontinental, W and others. We also have a Mexico City-based hotel management company called Grupo Posadas that owns and operates a number of the city’s top hotels. In all, we have more than 49,000 hotel rooms. We don’t have any problems in hosting large events.
Magda: We have 17 convention centers and special venues to host events. Centro Banamex is one of the largest and most beautiful convention centers in Latin America. It can host up to 50,000 people simultaneously. The World Trade Center of Mexico City recently won LEED Gold Certification. And we have unique venues such as a castle, an Aztec temple, a hippodrome, former palaces and more.
We’re very accessible. Our international airport, Benito Juarez, is the largest in Latin America in terms of flights and the second largest in passengers. Plus, we’re well-connected to a few other international airports in Mexico near the City. And according to ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), Mexico City is ranked among the top cities for events. Some that have recently taken place include the 12th World Congress of Bioethics (2014), the XXVIII Mint Directors Conference – Mexico (2014), the 33rd International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners (2011), the 7th World Chambers Congress (2011) and the XVII International AIDS Conference (2008).
What’s new about Mexico City?
Raquel: We will have a new international airport opening in 2018. We’re adding more operations and more space. We’ve chosen two internationally-recognized architects for the project, Norman Foster and Fernando Romero, so it’s going to be beautiful. We also have a lot of hotels now that are under construction or undergoing renovation. And we’ve opened a new aquarium. It’s one of the largest in the world and it’s spectacular.
What’s the final word about Mexico City as a location for meetings?
Magda: We’re working together with the private sector to sell our convention services as a total destination – convention centers, hotels, restaurants, culture, history, museums – showing all that we offer in order to give our visitors an unforgettable experience. Come see for yourself!
