'There's Never Been a Better Time to Be in Business,' says Ball
Technology is exploding in the event space. At the IAEE Expo! Expo! show in Anaheim, exhibitors displayed a convention floor full of new ideas, apps, beacons, systems and gizmos. And that’s where we caught up with Corbin Ball, MS, CSP, CMP, DES. Ball is an international speaker, consultant and writer helping clients use technology to save time and improve productivity. EventsInAmerica.com (EIA) spoke with Ball about his outlook for the industry and tips for event planners.
EIA: What new technologies are exciting you this year?
Ball: There are a number of them. I’m happy to see that booth beacons are in full use here at IAEE. It will be a real interesting test case to measure attendees’ experiences and the information that gets back to them. I’m excited to see events doing this.
In a broader sense, one of the hottest things you see happening right now is the continual move toward inter-operability. The newer cloud-based event management software systems are built from the ground up to be inter-operable. Those robust APIs are making it so a planner can choose a whole range of different technologies – event management, exhibition management, registration, mobile app, CRM system, sales automation system – they can be all different ones and they can work together using APIs. Essentially you can build your event deck or your tech deck in a way that you can pick and choose and get exactly what you want. That’s a real trend that’s happening. The older systems are harder for that to happen.
What 1 or 2 tips can you offer an event planner or event organizer to ensure she has a successful event?
I’ve been focused on improving the business process through the proper use of technology. That’s where there are a lot of opportunities out there. There’s never been a better time to be in business than right now. There’s a whole range of new tools that are available, so just become aware of those and start moving into that space. Make sure you have a mobile event app, obviously, but then start using the engagement tools that can be built around that.
What do you like most about attending IAEE Expo! Expo!?
This is one of the best shows of the year in terms of technology – and that’s why I’m here. It’s fun to see new things happening. Trade shows, which are typically on the cutting edge of the events industry in their use of technology, are bottom-line oriented and profit focused. Those are the types of components that make them pioneers for improvements in registration, lead retrieval and a whole range of other things. I’m excited to see these new technologies.
